Thursday Thirteen -- Week 9

  • May. 23rd, 2007 at 9:25 PM

Thirteen Thoughts from the book "God is in the Small Stuff and it all matters"

1. God knows what's in our hearts. We might as well get to the point.
2. Remember that God values you for who you are, not what you do.
3. God will never send a thirsty soul to a dry well.
4. God won't take away a sin until you give it to Him.
5. Don't worry about proving God's existence, because no one can disprove it.
6. Religion is man's attempt to find God. The Gospel is God's plan to reach man. Don't let religion stand in the way of your salvation.
7. The times when you need God the most are the times you don't think you need him.
8. The way you think about God does not define him.
9. Faith is not an emotion.
10. You can't network, strong-arm or sweet-talk your way into heaven. Your faith is all that counts.
11. Thank God that your salvation does not depend on you.
12. God is more likely to speak to you with a gentle whisper than with a loud voice.
13. One can definitely believe in God without even knowing him.

With you most of the way
Great list. I especially agree with points 6, 7, 8, and 12. I'm afraid I disagree with the end of 10 and all of 11. I'm a "faith without works is dead" kind of guy. Regardless of which branch of Christianity we are in, if we don't actually live in accordance to our beliefs and conduct ourselves in a Christ-like way, our faith is meaningless. It is reduced to just hot air. However, that's a lot deeper than you probably meant for this list to get.

It's nice to see your feelings about God posted so boldly for the world to see. I have a lot of respect for you. We may spend the rest of our lives trying to get to truly know God and Christ. It's a good thing number 13 is true. ;)

Re: With you most of the way
Perhaps I should have put up a disclaimer. I don't know that I agree with all 13 of these in their entirety.

I agree wholeheartedly that one must walk the walk if they are going to talk the talk, if given time on earth enough to do so. However, I do believe that sometimes the only work necessary for faith is the act of confession and acceptance of God's gift. If anything else was truly mandatory, deathbed conversions would be pointless.

However, I also believe that I can do nothing to earn my salvation, as it is a free gift from God through the death of Christ. That is what I believe number 11 is saying. The only part of my salvation that is dependant on me is my willingness to accept the gift. Any works that come out of that are acts of love and service.

Thanks for the comment!

God Is In The Small Stuff
I enjoyed your list. I like being reminded of great truths, it's easy to lose track of them in this crazy, fallen world. Great stuff!

Thanks for your comment!
Hi - thanks for swinging by earlier to comment on my TT verses list!

And on the Jeremiah passage, good question. I read it as a wisdom/guidance passage. In the midst of uncertainty, I take the passage to suggest that we need to stop, pause, listen, and look for the wise path, the tried-and-true ways that our faith forebears and that scripture have pointed out to us. The scary part, even in Jeremiah, the Lord says, "But you refuse to do this!" Human nature is so constant.

Blessings on your Friday!

Interesting list.

I've never read the book, so can't really comment on it directly. Thanks for stopping in earlier :)

Good list. I especially like number 9. "Faith is not an emotion".

I feel the same way about love. It's not an emotion, it's a commitment. There are emotions that are associated with it, but they are neither faith nor love.

Hello! I thought I'd return your visit to my blog. This livejournal thingy has an interesting look to it.
Thanks for your comment, and yes, I'm pretty sure Dr. Falwell was referring to slothful habits of some preachers he knew. I'm sure there are a few of them out there, but I've never met any of them! Most pastor's wives tell me their husbands are too busy!
I like your list of thirteen. Good stuff! I may have to pick up a copy of that book somewhere. Thank you for sharing!
